STOLA - Saluki Tree of Life Alliance - is the national nonprofit Saluki hound rescue charity dedicated to helping
Salukis in need. STOLA is comprised of all dedicated, unsalaried volunteers so all donations go directly to helping dogs in need. At STOLA we take the hounds from kill shelters or abusive situations, provide them with much needed veterinary medical care, grooming and socialization in experienced foster homes while they are returning to health. When they are healthy again we place them in carefully screened adoptive homes where they will receive the love and care they need for a lifetime. If, for any reason, an adoptive home is not able to keep the Saluki the hound is returned to us for rehoming.

Salukis are thought to be the world’s first domesticated dog, dating back with humans more than 6000 years. Salukis are sensitive creatures who need to be family members.The rich Saluki history is tightly bound with human
development and they have been partners and companions to humans for thousands of years. Salukis were known to exist as hunting hounds of the Egyptian pharaohs, in the court of the Emperor of China, in the castles of European nobles and, today, in the homes of fanciers worldwide.

Since Salukis are not a well known breed, we are often asked: “Why do they need a rescue group?” Sadly, Salukis do need a rescue group. Since STOLA was formed in 2000, we have helped hundreds of hounds find loving homes. We have successfully placed large groups of abused Salukis from animal hoarders who came to us in deplorable condition covered in rat bites, starved, filthy, filled with parasites, limping from broken legs, damaged from gunshot wounds, and traumatized from abuse. With veterinary care and a lot of love from amazing
volunteers these dogs are now living happy, healthy lives. While STOLA has a very active fundraising program, we rely on donations to continue helping the dogs who need us so much.
