Happy Endings- Penny Tanya Amberson

Our first Happy Endings story was shared by Judith Piper who runs Old Dog Haven, a wonderful canine rescue that provides adoption and hospice for elderly abandoned dogs (learn more at www.olddoghaven.org

This story is about Penny, a 12 year old Shepherd mix. She belonged to an elderly woman who had trouble caring properly for her even though they loved each other very much.

Penny was very over weight from eating people food and she also had developed a terrible skin infection which caused her to scratch her face so much that she was permanently disfigured. Finally there came a time when Penny's elderly caretaker had to go to a nursing home and Penny was left sick and grief stricken. She would not eat or even move and finally the elderly woman's family took Penny to Old Dog Haven in hopes that she could be helped.

Judith says Penny spent the first month grieving, the second month healing, and in the third month decided she was ready for a new home, preferable one where she had a job. Soon,

Judith received a call from an older lady looking for a companion dog and Penny was taken to visit her perspective new owner. It was love at first sight. Penny has her job now, as self designated caretaker over her new family, Cheryl, and Cheryl's kitty cats.

There was one scary time though, when Cheryl became ill and had to go to the hospital. Judith brought Penny back to Old Dog Haven and everyone was very worried, Penny most of all. She waited at the yard gate the whole time for Cheryl to come and get her. What a devoted dog!

Thankfully Cheryl made a full recovery and was able to go get Penny. In fact, she picked Penny up from Old Dog Haven  on the way home from the hospital .

So Penny has been one of the lucky rescue dogs to have a happy ending to her story, thanks to the hard work and kind hearts of Judith and Lee Piper at Old Dog Haven and the many wonderful people who support Old Dog Haven. -TA
