Clancy's Miracle:
Sometimes a life is saved by a series of unlikely events.
Tucker was a homeless senior Dachshund dog with a host of health problems, including blindness and a chronic skin condition. His teeth were missing and his jaw bone had deteriorated from neglect. His lack of teeth caused his tongue to slip out the side of his mouth.
Despite these physical issues, Tucker was a very happy boy who had a lot of love to give, if someone would just be willing to look past his appearance. Then came along Katie, who saw Tucker for the loving companion he was. Against all odds, Tucker found a loving forever home.
When Tucker passed away last month, Katie missed him horribly. The void he left in her life became too great and she decided that she needed another dachshund in her life.
Gretchen was a homeless dachshund in rescue who was turned in by an owner who decided that she simply did not want to care for her anymore. From the moment Katie laid eyes on her, she knew that Gretchen was the one. Gretchen was 4 years old and loved to snuggle. Katie adopted her and one again, had a loving companion at her side.
Then Tragedy struck. On the third day after the adoption, while Katie was away, Gretchen got out and was nowhere to be found.
Katie searched desperately knowing that coyotes were hunting for small animals. That night, the temperature dipped below freezing and eight inches of snow fell. Katie had to face the heartbreaking reality that Gretchen could not have possibly survived the sub-zero temperatures and predators. But one ray of hope still shined; the local pound. She went down to see if, by some miracle, Gretchen was there.
It was at the pound that Katie saw Clancy, a small senior terrier who was scheduled to be euthanized that morning. Clancy was 12 years old and was in good health, aside of a large tumor on his hip. Unfortunately, healthy senior dogs are rarely adopted. Senior dogs with health issues like Clancy did not have a chance. Much to Katie's sorrow, Gretchen was not at the pound. But when she looked into Clancy's eyes, she knew she had to adopt him. Clancy had found a loving home!
The next day Katie got a phone call. Gretchen had been found alive! She was about a half mile from home. It was a miracle that she survived 2 nights in sub- zero temperatures and Katie was thrilled! Her family now had two loving companions!
In a moment of revelation, she knew, had Gretchen not escaped, Clancy would have likely died, which would have been a tragedy, considering the loving and feisty nature of her newest companion.
Since then, Katie has gotten Clancy the veterinary care he needed to remove the tumor on his hip. The veterinarian expects him to fully recover and noted that he has no other heath issues. Gretchen has not run away and the pair enjoy one another's company.

One wonders if some angels were not at work, one protecting a lost dog and the other making sure an old terrier had a second chance at love against all the odds.
